It is important to seek help from others, but it is also important to seek help from yourself. When going through your recovery, whether it is from addiction or learning to cope with your mental health, empathy is extremely important.

Loving yourself is the most important thing. If you do not love yourself, the recovery process is going to be a lot harder than what it should be. Loving yourself gives you the courage to take on the battle ahead, it reminds you that you are strong, and that what you are facing will not break you. Friend and family may tell you these things, but it is important that you believe them as well.

There are going to be set backs, in the process of your recovery. There might be something that comes into your life that gives you an anxiety attack that you can’t seem to cope with, while getting off drugs something might trigger the urge to use again, or the withdrawal symptoms might seem too much where you are going to want to use again. Having empathy for yourself allows you not to give into using drugs again when times are tough and it lets you see that you will get passed this anxiety attack just like you have the other anxiety attacks.

Having empathy for yourself will also prevent yourself from having anxiety over what people think of you. Going through recovery is tough and you don’t need to worry about what others are thinking. You are doing what is right for you and you are trying to get better. That is the most important thing to remember and if someone cannot support that, you might want to reevaluate if you want them in your life or not. Never believe it if someone tells you that you’re not strong enough for recovery. You are.

If you know someone that is going through recovery, it is important you show them empathy. There might be times during their recovery where they have a set back or where they lash out. These episodes do not mean that they are weak or that recovery is not working for them. Everyone has a set back and can lash out from time to time. You have to be patient, since recovery does not happen overnight. It is a long process and it will take patience from both you and your loved one. Once recovery happens, life will be much better for everyone involved.
