Does Big Pharma Also Have the Patent to the Solution to the Opioid Epidemic?

The opioid epidemic has become a national crisis causing approximately 72,000 deaths in 2017 which is expected to become an even higher statistic in 2018 which is altogether astounding. Several states have begun to sue Purdue Pharma, the pharmaceutical company that is said to be the promoter of opioids without communicating the potential for addiction they actually held. While the pharmaceutical company could not financially ever bring back a precious life, they are being held accountable for the intentional misconduct that they are accused of causing for the remaining living relatives.

In the meantime, Purdue Pharma has been reported to have the solution to stop the opioid problem. The multimillion-dollar company has been reported to have patented a new drug that is a form of buprenorphine in which to stop the cravings and withdrawal with a much lower propensity to become addictive. This newer drug could be used for drug replacement therapy as well as for pain management in months to come.

There are people who are having a hard time trying to swallow this irony at its finest with Purdue Pharma being the problem surrounding the opioid epidemic and then again profiting financially with a possible antidote. Mothers, fathers, and children have already been unfairly targeted by opioids to face the ultimate demise – dying from the addictive and strong effects caused by opioids. Should the same company who has injured the country be able to distribute yet more prescription drugs without knowing what the potential outcome with these new opioid blockers will be?

Whether people are angry at the flow of money going to a “greedy” Purdue Pharma or not, the truth is that there needs to be a solution to lower the death toll caused by opioids, so all options should be exhausted. The population should be spared for the endless and pointless deaths that are continuing to occur with each passing day. Looking at all of the possible resolutions for this enormous problem is not only crucial but also necessary to keep history from repeating itself.

While Purdue Pharma can no longer peddle Oxycontin to doctors and their patients, coming up with the patent of yet another prescription medication really seems more risky than hopeful.  Drugs such as Suboxone have done some good for certain people, but it has also started others down a rabbit hole of more addiction. Testing and research should be administered first to see what the contingencies could actually turn out to be with the new patented drug.
