When you hang around the rooms of a 12-Step program, most likely you will hear people talk about how grateful they are. For someone who is newly sober, this can seem rather ridiculous because why would someone be grateful that they can no longer drink or use? The answer to that is rather simple actually. Someone who has found a way out from under and begins to live a life in recovery will absolutely be grateful that they no longer have to live like that anymore.

How do people find this so-call gratitude that people seem to exude?

By taking the time to figure out what is important and what is not, they can often get an understanding of the concept of gratitude. One of the ways that people find out why they are grateful is making a list. Listing out on paper what they are grateful for each day can change someone’s perspective rather quickly. The key is not to say the same items of gratitude every time but change it up to keep their outlook fresh.

What types of things should someone be grateful for?

There is no right or wrong answer for this question because everyone is different. The general items that are listed tend to be family, shelter, food, water, and those sorts of things. Getting creative with a gratitude list should evolve the longer that the list is attempted. People find that they are thankful for the rain, a heartfelt smile someone gave them, or even finding that perfect parking spot. The point is to find things that have actually made someone’s day that much better. Including the really trivial and seemingly small items will begin making a difference in their attitude.

Do gratitude lists actually work?

Anytime someone has a grateful heart, they are certain to be in a much better place because it is impossible to be resentful and grateful at the same time. A gratitude list a great tool to train someone to look for the silver lining in all circumstances when they start to feel down. Most people who do their gratitude list consistently tend to be happier with what they have.

Using a gratitude list is one of those recovery tools that just seems to work with a plethora of people who want to be happy, joyous, and free. Grab a journal or a piece of paper and start jotting down what you are thankful for today.
