First things first. Relapse is not part of everyone’s recovery story. Unfortunately, relapse can and does occur. Many people become trapped in guilt and shame and don’t continue in recovery. Other people never return to recovery after a relapse. If relapse has become part of your story, it’s time to dust yourself off and move forward.

The first thing you need to do is get back into the groove of recovery. Perhaps this means that you need to go to treatment. Treatment is an excellent intervention to be able to refocus and get to the roots of alcohol and drug use.

If you are unable to go to inpatient treatment, you still need to do whatever is necessary to get back into recovery. However, addiction professionals are in agreement that addiction treatment is a strong and successful option for sobriety.

12 step programs are a wonderful place to start. 12 step programs offer you accountability, direction, and purpose. 12 step meetings are more than just meetings. 12 step meetings teach you to stay sober and teach you how to live a full life. The 12 step programs have helped millions of people around the world.

Successful recovery involves building a new life. Part of life is pleasure and fun. You need to replace old, negative behaviors with positive ones. You should prioritize meetings, time with sober friends, and sober hobbies. An important tool of recovery is achieving balance. You need to be part of a recovery program, but you also need to have fun.

Take a thorough look at the relapse with a sponsor or mentor. Make a written list of the steps leading up to the relapse. Chances are that relapse began with unhealthy thoughts, entertaining old behaviors, or even burning out because you weren’t balanced in your recovery.

After you have taken a look at the relapse and worked with a mentor or sponsor, you can decide if you need to go to inpatient treatment. Listen to the suggestions of those closest to you. Take advantage of their support.
