Every year on Valentine’s Day there are couples that celebrate with fancy dinners, chocolates, and champagne. Seeing everyone’s pictures on Facebook and Instagram is enough to drive you mad while giving you unnecessary FOMO. Now that you are sober, and single, you are uninterested in Valentine’s Day altogether because everything that you are refraining from represents that day. The good news is that you can celebrate Valentine’s Day by making it your own.

Celebrate with sober friends

While these Valentine’s Day pictures depict a romantic evening, what they do not show you is the arguments, unmet expectations, and undue comparisons that could easily happen on this day that is meant for lovers. Going out with friends instead will help to take all those pressures away which can allow you to focus on enjoying a fancy dinner and delicious chocolate desserts rather than trying to impress a lover.

Celebrate sober

You may not be able to have champagne, but you can still enjoy your Valentine’s Day, and more importantly, remember it the next day without regret. Invest in some apple cider and some fancy glassware that is not intended to make you fantasize about drinking champagne. The point is to find a way to celebrate Valentine’s Day in a more productive way by finding healthier ways to not feel left out.

Celebrate after a meeting

If you are feeling out of sorts or like you are going to drink or use, get to a meeting. Do not let your rejection of the past, or the present, have power over your sobriety. Sharing in a meeting will not only help you, but you could help someone else who might be feeling lonely this Valentine’s Day. Relating to others who have felt the way you feel and have gone through what you are going through can you give you the hope that you need to get through this day of love with one more day of sobriety.

Celebrate because you can

You probably missed so many holidays in the past because you were inebriated. Take this opportunity to enjoy Valentine’s Day this year and be present in the moment. Drugs and alcohol only give you the illusion that they will make a holiday more fun when in actuality they could ruin the whole day like they used to. Without them, you can celebrate with meaning and integrity.

Valentine’s Day is a great day to stay sober even without booze or a significant other. Use your recovery tools and remain focused on what this day should represent – loving your sober self.
