Spirituality means something different for everyone. You may feel put off from recovery because of the spiritual nature of many self help programs, including the 12 steps. Before you run out the door, take a few moments to learn about true spirituality in recovery.

Spirituality does not mean that you need to go to church every week. Although, you can if you like. Spirituality is not religion. However, some recovering people have found solace in church or a spiritual setting. The point of spirituality is to find what works and feels best for you.

Addiction damages the core of a person. Active addiction belittles your soul, spirit, and physical body. Alcohol and drug abuse is essentially self harm. Spirituality is the opposite of self harm. Remember, being spiritual is not about rules and religions. Spirituality is the search for deeper meaning in life and as a person. This epiphany comes in many different forms.

For the person in AA, spirituality can mean the power of the group and a belief in a Higher Power. For the Buddhist, spirituality may mean being one with nature and finding acceptance with life. Spirituality comes in many different forms. Spirituality is unique to each person.

The dictionary defines spirituality as being concerned with the soul and the human condition. For some, this may mean that serving in a soup kitchen or chairing an AA meeting is a spiritual experience. Consider AA. AA is about one recovering person helping another. Being concerned with another’s condition and wellness is essentially spirituality.

As you move forward in life, your definition of spirituality may change. Life experience provides new perspectives. Situations and circumstances change, as will your views of self, others, and spirituality. So don’t beat yourself up if you don’t feel all that spiritual when you start recovery. Your perspective may very well change in the future
