Each year in the months of either March or April, spring break takes place around the country for students of all grade levels. This time devoted to taking a break before graduation to the next academic level is a time to let loose. For older students in high school and college especially, drugs and alcohol are known for running rampant in a “Girls gone wild” meets the “Bachelor in Paradise” type of setting.

In this kind of environment, it could be rather daunting to stay sober while others are planning to endure a 7-day buzz binging vacation. Being around people who use and drink while appearing to have a blast can be quite confusing to a person who is in recovery. On one hand, they know that once they have that first drink or hit, they will not be able to stop and getting sober was hard enough. On the other hand, they may conveniently forget how bad their situation was before and just wanting to “party” like everyone else. The best thing you can do for your spring break is to put your sobriety first.

Consult a sober mentor

Knowing that your friends will be doing something without you may be the fuel that is making you want to go on a trip that will no doubt be a nonstop inebriation sesh. You may even be solid in your program enough to think you can endure the partying atmosphere now that you have been sober for a while. Talk out the pros and cons of spring break with someone you trust and come to the best conclusion based on what you think you can handle with your friends. If you decide you cannot hang in this capacity, there will be plenty of other options for you consider.

Plan your own sober vacation

The best way to do what you want to do and need to do to remain sober is to plan your own designation vacation or even a staycation. Find some sober friends and plan a trip together. There is so much you can do when your main aspiration is to hang out in the bars making a fool of yourself. You can wake up and remember where you went the day before and really appreciate the food and culture on whatever adventure you embark on.

Carefully consider what being around binge drinking and drugging will do in your recovery before you decide to jet off. Chances are that staying away from people whose mean intention is to get faded into spring break may prove to be the best R and R and R you can get – rest, relaxation, and recovery.
