In the therapy world, there is an intervention called the A-B-C model. The A-B-C model theorizes that there is a connection between activating events of the past, beliefs, and consequences. Consequences can be either positive or negative.

For example, if you grew up in a negative or abusive environment, you may have received messages that you were unlovable, unworthy of positive things. These early messages created an internal set of beliefs for you. As you got older, you may have start to have deep rooted beliefs of being unlovable. These negative and distorted beliefs started to become actions. For many people, these actions came out in the form of alcohol and drug use. Alcohol and drug use carries many types of consequences including addiction, jail, and missed connections and relationships.

Once you begin the journey of recovery, your belief systems have to change. Through healing and time, you will begin to see life and yourself differently. Your sense of self-worth and esteem will improve the longer that you stay sober. Recovery helps you heal old wounds that may have kept you in the cycle of addiction. The healing process and changing your belief systems take time, but you are worth the effort.

Recovery and inner healing will replace your old belief systems with newer, healthier beliefs. Addiction has deep roots, often based in trauma, pain, and life disappointments. Because of these deep roots, recovery involves more than putting down the drugs and alcohol. Recovery involves learning new coping skills, learning how to handle stress, and learning how to love yourself.

Using the A-B-C model, once distorted beliefs change, your beliefs and actions will change. Recovery will help you lean that you are loveable, dedicated, and valuable. Once you replace distorted beliefs with positive ones, your actions will change. Subsequently, negative consequences will be replaced by positive consequences. Positive consequences are:

  • Healthier view of self
  • Abstinence from drugs and alcohol
  • Life enjoyment
  • Repaired relationships with friends and family
  • Improved physical health
  • Decreased depression and anxiety
  • Contentment
