Burn out is hazardous for your recovery. Burn out can and will lead to relapse. Feeling fatigued from recovery occurs because you may have overdone it. Burn out contributes to you losing your motivation and your joy. You start to get tired of doing what it takes to stay sober, and this is truly a dangerous place to be.

Addiction experts have discussed that early recovery is similar to being in a pink cloud. The pink cloud of recovery is almost like a honeymoon phase. You are feeling better, looking better, and you feel on top of the world. This feeling does not last forever because life has ups and downs. Essentially, you will have bad days. Expecting to feel euphoric and excited 24/7 is setting yourself up for burn out. You will experience all types of emotions in recovery, this is okay. As time goes on, you will learn how to handle life on life’s terms.

Doing something tomorrow that should be done today is also dangerous for your recovery. Saying to yourself that you don’t need a meeting or group today because you can go tomorrow can lead to feeling burnt-out or obligated. Recovery is definitely a decision that you make on a daily basis, but sobriety isn’t a punishment.

Expecting too much, too soon. Change occurs gradually over time. You can feel burn out if you don’t see results soon enough. This applies to anything in life, but especially recovery. Alcohol and drug use may have caused problems in your life. Some consequences may not repair instantly. Expecting for change to happen instantly can cause disappointment. Don’t despair, change will happen and old wounds will heal.

Not having enough balance in your life can also contribute to burn out. While it is important to go to meetings and call your sponsor, you need to have fun and unwind. Go to the after meeting dinner, go on a sober cruise, travel the world, get lost in nature. Whatever you do, enjoy your life and have fun.
