Will Meditation Make a Difference in My Sobriety?

Staying sober means that new activities will have to take the place of using drugs and alcohol. Recovery programs offer tools to be put into place which specifically help people who suffer from addiction to cope. Sobriety is a huge change that takes some effort to maintain and with the help of recovery tools, the process goes more smoothly.

One of the tools that is suggested is meditation. This suggestion may throw you for a loop because meditation is something you are unsure of. What you have heard of meditation may not have interested you before because of the visual that has been portrayed to you. Sitting cross legged on the floor chanting or speaking in tongues may not appeal to you too much. Well, put this misconception behind you because meditation is what you make of it.

Be comfortable

The point of meditation is to gain inner peace which means you should find a style that appeals to you and makes you feel comfortable. Whether you are sitting quietly on your couch breathing for a few minutes to get centered or using a guided meditation you found on YouTube, there is no improper way to meditate.   

Be efficacious

Although there is no wrong way to meditate, you will want your time spent in reflection to be productive. You will need to do something that will get you into a state rumination with intent and purpose otherwise you will lose interest rather quickly.

Be consistent

If you only meditate once in a while, you will probably not get the full benefit of meditation. To enhance your recovery through mediation, you should plan a certain time of the day such as when you wake up or right before bed, to get used to this relaxation method. Set a reminder in your phone to get you into a regular habit of seeking a connection with your Higher Power.

Be united

To get better results in recovery you must find a conception of a power greater than yourself by connecting to a Higher Power. Mediation can bridge this gap through sitting still and opening your soul to a peaceful existence for a small period of time. Breathing and focusing on positive thoughts will get rid of negativity to bring you closer to the spirit of the universe.

Meditation may be off putting for you to consider, but you should not knock it until you try it. Many people who put off mediation often realize that they have been missing out all along and are bummed that they did not find out about this amazingness sooner.
